Chick Webb was a famous band leader and American swing and jazz drummer of the early 1900’s. It was an honor to be a part of this revival of his music for a new generation to play and experience. You can learn more about this project and those who made it happen here.
Research took me back and forth between listening to some of his famous pieces and the artwork of yesterday that portrayed his image. The color pallet chosen were a tribute to an early piece featuring Webb. Custom lettering was done from the feel I got from learning about him, the style of the day, and hearing his music. He was a renowned drummer Ballroom, so his drums were included with his silhouette. I kept details to a minimum and only included what seemed to represent him: Clothes he wore, poses he took, type of drums played, all to try to capture part of his legend in one piece of art.
Work containing elements of art deco design, dance, and swing era style continue to be some of my favorite pieces to create.
